Homemade Vanilla Extract

Updated: Oct 14, 2023

Do you remember the last time that someone gave you a gift that was thoughtful, whether homemade/handmade or just something they knew you would really enjoy? It's always the BEST!

Homemade gifts can take a considerable amount of time to make, but you're in for a treat because today's recipe only takes 5 minutes to assemble. If you have anyone that loves to cook and you're fresh out of ideas for the perfect gift, this homemade Vanilla Extract is sure to impress - but don't wait, it takes at least 8 weeks to infuse for optimal flavor.

Pro Tips:

  • Homemade Vanilla Extract lasts for up to 5 years if stored in a cool and dry place. If at any time it appears cloudy or smells unpleasant, those are good clues that it's time to pitch it and start a new batch.

  • Do not refrigerate or freeze after opening.

  • If in making your vanilla extract, it still has a taste of alcohol, let it continue to steep for at least another month.

  • Skip Grey Goose, and go for something practical! We really enjoy Tito's, so that felt like an easy choice!

  • Vanilla beans come in different grades, most commonly A and B. Grade A vanilla beans are longer, plumper, and have higher moisture. Grade B is meant for extracting and will end up giving your extract more flavor (recommended for this recipe), whereas Grade A is meant for cooking. Grade B also tends to be more price effective, so that's a plus!

Our recipe is made with vodka, but if your gift recipient is a fan of bourbon, brandy, or rum those are also all fantastic options, as well!

If you're interested in bottling them individually for multiple gifts this Christmas, Amazon sells some fantastic sizing options:

If you happen to stumble upon a wine or liquor bottle you really like the shape of, we like to soak the label off, wash, and with a new cork they can be used as a bottle for homemade cocktails for parties. Those bottles can also be used here for something that's a little bit more unique (and free!).

Now, hurry! Run to the store and get your vanilla beans, the season for gift giving is just around the corner!
